The State Defence Logistics and Procurement Centre (VALIC) contributes to shaping NATO codification policy.
In June 2025, the Data Management Department of the State Defence Logistics and Procurement Centre (VALIC), representing Latvia’s interests in NATO codification matters, took part in the annual meeting of NATO National Codification Bureau Directors - the “AC/135 Main Group.”
The meeting was organised by the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA), which oversees the NATO Stock Number (NSN) codification system. In Latvia, these functions are carried out by VALIC in its role as the National Codification Bureau, ensuring the centralized codification and standardization of defence materiel in line with NATO requirements. In practice, this means assigning NATO Stock Numbers (NSN) to all types of materiel.
NSN codification provides a unified system for identifying defense materiel across all NATO member states, enabling compatible logistics planning and efficient data management.
The AC/135 Main Group meeting serves as a platform for taking strategic decisions on codification processes, data quality, the development of codification IT systems, and improvements to the NSN catalogue. Given the current security situation in Europe and ongoing support to Ukraine, particular attention this year was paid to accelerating information exchange and improving the responsiveness of NSN requests.
VALIC’s active participation in these formats is important both for strengthening Latvia’s defence capabilities and for contributing to the resilience of NATO’s shared systems.
AC/135 is the largest NATO Allied committee in terms of participating countries, bringing together 32 NATO members and 34 non-NATO nations. It manages the NATO codification system and helps ensure that soldiers receive the equipment they need, where and when they need it.
